Verona

...a UNESCO world heritage site

"The historical town of Verona, founded in the first century before Christ, went through periods of great expansion in the 13th and 14th centuries under the rule of the Scaliger family and again between the 15th and 17th centuries under the Republic of Venice. It was also an excellent example of a fortified city. Numerous ancient monuments are still visible from medieval times to the Italian Risorgimento. It is a city of culture and art."

One of its most renowned monuments is surely the Arena, the third amphitheater in Italy after the Roman Colosseum and the Capuano colosseum, but it is the only one still in use and is the venue for the summer open air opera season and rock concerts where world famous musicians have drawn thousands of spectators.

Another remaining Roman construction is the romantic Old Stone Bridge (Ponte Pietra) over the Adige river that flows through town. The bridge offers beautiful views and is located between the center of town and the foot of the Torricelle hills, where stairs lead to a high point from which to enjoy the beautiful panorama.

Verona is also known around the world as the 'city of love'. Shakespeare used Verona for the setting of the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet - the most loved and famous tale of all times. A stop at Juliet’s balcony and tomb and Romeo’s house are musts during a tour around the city.
